Brain Age Test

This is really fun !!

This test, or series of 5 exercises, determines your "Brain Age". If your Brain Age is LESS than your ACTUAL age, then you are in good shape.

They are fun tests - you don't need to be a scientist, or an historian to take this test - BUT - you will need a mouse that's in good working order. In all, it takes about 3-4 minutes to take (longer if you wait between exercises, which you can do)

Enjoy!!

Not Because We’re Getting Old

How often have you walked into a room, forgot what you went in there for and said to yourself, “I must be getting old?” Don’t worry. It has nothing to do with age. Research from the University of Notre Dame reveals walking through doorways is the cause. Dr. Gabriel Radvansky Professor of psychology observed, “Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an “event boundary “in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away.” This compartmentalization of memories hinders our ability to retrieve thoughts or decisions made in another room. So no more self recrimination every time you find yourself in a room with no idea what you came in there for. Now if anyone could just tell me why I can never remember where I put my glasses.

60s Music and Beyond

Remember when you and the music were one? When it spoke your thoughts even before you knew that’s what you were thinking? It kept changing with you and changing you. You were a part of something special, underground and cutting edge. Then one day, riding the elevator or shopping in the grocery, you hear your hallowed tunes as Muzack and suddenly feel old. Somewhere you and the music got lost.

You still love your old favorites but don’t want to stay stuck in the 60s. Wouldn’t it be great to find new stuff that gave you the same thrill? Maybe you don’t even know how to find your music anymore. Going from vinyl to CD was no biggie but taking the digital leap can be a bit intimidating.

Hold on. Help is coming from an unexpected source. AARP which has courted us boomers for a long time, only to have us respond to its invitations as if they were draft notices, fnally figured out the way to our hearts is through music.

AARP has launched a free internet radio service just for us. Their custom digital player offers 18 channels mixing new music with old in genres from Broadway, Classical, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, and Rock, to Latin. Its simple navigation tools let you easily pause or skip songs you don’t like as well as get information on what is playing complete with artists bios. You can listen to Paul Simon’s new album, get a sampling of what is hot now or take a trip down memory lane. So cherish the old sounds and discover the new thanks to AARP.

PREPARING FOR AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

A successful retirement requires more than good financial planning. Preparing for an active lifestyle that is right for you is also essential. Unfortunately most retirement planning advice focuses on the financial issues. That is why I am excited to tell you about retirement-stories.com, an excellent source for essential non-financial information. This site has stories about relationships, early retirement, retirement jobs, retirement hobbies, best places to retire, and a very popular section on retirement speeches and letters.

Retirement–stories webmaster Greg Butler retired from his position as Finance and Marketing Director of Barry’s Tea in January 2007. He now pursues his interest in writing and retirement coaching, through the medium of inspirational stories. He tells real stories about real people, to enable retirees to understand their retirement needs, identify and achieve worthy goals, and lead a more balanced and fulfilled life.

This is interesting and a little weird.

This year there are be four unique dates.

1/1/11

1/11/11

11/1/11

11/11/11

Now take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add the age you will be this year. The answer for every boomer will be 111.

Senior Discounts Ease the Pain

The baby boomers start turning 65 this year. That’s a hard pill to swallow for those of us who didn’t trust anyone over thirty. But adding discount to the dreaded word “senior“ makes our coming of age a little more tolerable. There are senior discounts on anything from airlines to Xanax.

Here are a few examples of places that offer discounts to seniors:

Amtrak, Hyatt Hotels,
Arby’s, Ihop,
Banana Republic, Jiffy Lube,
Burger King, National Car Rental,
Chili’s, Super Cuts.

So don’t worry about our new title. At least there are some advantages to being a senior. Who knows, you might even get a seat on the bus.

Tai Chi For Life

Baby Boomers wishing to stay physically fit well into old age may find Tai Chi the perfect answer. Unlike most forms of exercise that dissipate energy, Tai Chi accumulates energy and promotes relaxation. Its slow, continuous movements are easy on the joints and muscles yet enhance muscle strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness while reducing blood pressure, stress, pain, fatigue and risk of falling.

Jane Brody, of the New York Times, sees no downside to Tai Chi. “It is a low-impact activity suitable for people of all ages and most states of health, even those who “hate” exercise or have long been sedentary.”

So why not try it? As my grandmother would say,” it couldn’t hurt.”
