Life in the 60s
As we Boomers enter our 60s, our
lifestyle
is ironically morphing into the kind of life we lived in
the 60s,
albeit with less hair. Once again we find ourselves exploring new ideas and possibilities, examining core beliefs, striving for
a simpler, greener existence.
But unlike in the 60s, we are aware of the limitations of time and are asking ourselves, “If not now when?” We are concerned about the kind of legacy we leave and haunted by unfinished promises.
In the past this new stage was called
retirement.
But retire, implying withdrawal from action, doesn’t fit our self-concept any more than aging does. We don’t want to stop doing. We want to do more. As Bill Gates said “It’s not about retiring; it’s about reordering your priorities.” The object now is to put our time and energy into what we truly deem important.
Finding a balance between work and play is also a priority. Taking time to smell the roses, play with our grandchildren and pursue our
deepest interests
takes precedence over amassing a fortune. Hopefully we have discovered where our innate talents lie and desire to focus on those strengths. If we haven’t found our authentic path yet, this is the time to do it.
There is a wonderful freedom in getting older. The trivial concerns that once held us in constraint, such as concern for the opinions of others or the need for perfection, no longer hold the same sway. We can go easier on ourselves and accept our limitations as well as relish our successes. All in all our 60s are shaping up to be an interesting and fulfilling time of life in which we have the opportunity to realize our
truest wishes.
