TAI CHI CHUAN

Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese martial art form based on universal principles of body mechanics, is practiced by millions of adherents in both the East and the West, more as a protection against internal foes such as stress and aging, than as a defense against external enemies.

Jane Brody, of the New York Times, sees no downside to Tai Chi Chuan Its slow, gentle, continuous movements combine the benefits of exercise, meditation and deep breathing to enhance physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Low impact, weight bearing training, strengthens the bones while working all the major muscles and joints. Tai chi movements release tension, lower blood pressure and enhance circulation, lung capacity, muscle strength, flexibility and balance.

Eastern medicine attributes the benefits of Tai Chi Chuan to unblocking the flow of chi or life force. Though Western medicine does not yet acknowledge the concept of chi, as it has not been scientifically proven, it does recognize the benefits of Tai Chi. Tai Chi is frequently recommended by Western physicians as an adjunct therapy to improve the quality of life for those suffering from numerous conditions including chronic pain, anxiety, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis.

In the East, parks and outdoor spaces are filled every morning with Tai Chi practitioners. Here in the West, especially in metropolitan areas with large Asian populations, Tai Chi exercise is becoming a morning ritual for many. If you are lucky enough to live in such a place, the best way to learn Tai Chi is to go out and join them. Follow the movements of those that are the most competent and practice with them every day.

Though numerous instructional books, websites and CD’s are available, learning Tai Chi from a competent instructor produces the best results. Classes are offered at many YMCAs, health clubs, continuing education programs and through private instructors. T’AI CHI Magazine provides information on Tai Chi, Qigong and other internal Chinese martial arts. They can answer your questions on martial arts topics and keep you informed of upcoming workshops and events.

By practicing Tai Chi Chuan you will begin receiving benefits quickly. The longer you practice the more benefits you will get. There are always new levels to reach. No wonder TIME Magazine calls it, “the perfect exercise.”
